STORM COVERED A WIDE AREA

A rip-snorting old time blizzard struck this section of Montana last Monday night, and with a 40 mile wind blowing kept it up for fully twenty-four hours. Tuesday's storm was the worst experienced here for some time, the thermometer registered around 18 below all day and as low as 38 early Wednesday morning. All mail routes were put out of commission Tuesday with the exception of Bill Hubing, made the trip through to Brockway , with the Richey mail.

THE SCHOOL REPORTER

Friday Morning the Social Science Class had a debate. The question was resolved that the Electoral College be abolished. The debaters were: The affirmative; Inert Amundson, Alice Cole, and Anna Marie Ridge, The negative; Lloyd Decker, Freda Mahlstedt and Lucille Strecker. Messes, Taylor, Markel and Wright were judges.

TWO HANG AT HYSHAM

Just before daylight this morning Joe B. Regin and Glenna M. Bolton were hanged in the Treasure County jail at Hysham for the murder of Undersheriff Irving Keeler. The men went to the scaffold with no evidence of nervousness. Bolton was the first to appear and was accompanied by the Rev. G.B. Nye of the Hysham Presbyterian church. Sheriff Phil Isaac and Under Sheriff W.E. Williamson, mounted the scaffold with the falling snow whitening his bared head and faced the assembled witnesses, He thanked the officers, in a final statement for their courtesy to during the year he has been held in jail and for their kindness to mother and sisters. The hood was drawn over his head at 3:41 a.m. and the trap sprung. He was pronounced dead at 3:49. Reagin was taken to the scaffold ten minutes later, accompanied by the minister and the officers and walking as rapidly as his crippled knee, shattered by a rifle bullet in effecting this capture, would permit. He made some remark about the snow storm and took his place under the noose without any show of fear or nervousness. : I hope to meet all you men on the other side of the blue. So long" was his answer to the opportunity given by the sheriff to make a statementand as the hood was being put in place he shouted, "Goodby, men" in a voice that could be heard for a considerable distance. The drop fell at 3:45 a.m. and Reagin was pronounced dead 16 minutes later.

WATKINS LADY DIES

Mrs. Christina Schaak, wife of Erdmann Schaak of the Watkins community passed away. County Coroner J.J. Moriarty was called in company with commissioner Robert Lindh made a trip. Cause of death is said to be asthma which the deceased had suffered for some time.

BROCKWAY NOTES

A group of Brockway people are putting up ice for the summer. Mr Ennis made a business trip to Circle Sunday. The following people are on the Brockway Honor Roll: Myra Dean McKean, Merle Boyd, Mable Syverson, Herbert Syverson, Golda Fleming, Grace Fleming, Clifford Angel, Alice Seeley, Evelyn Larson, Sigrid Hinnaland, Harold Czeornig is working on the ice this week.

FINED FOR KILLING DEER

Pleading guilty to killing a deer out of season, Thomas Cusick, residing near Java, paid a fine of $50 in the court of Justice of the Peace McCarthy and his hunting and fishing license was suspended for a year.

Miss Joan Mary Schillinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schillinger of Vida, and Dale Goodale, son of Mrs. Marie Goodale of Circle. Present at the wedding were Mr and MRs Joe Schillinger, Mrs, Marie Goodale, Cecil Goodale and Joyce McCulloch.

DEDICATION F.U. OIL STATION

The new Farmers Union Oil Station will be dedicated on February 14th, 1948.

BROCKWAY NEWS

Last week three former G I's , Leo Larson, Emmanuel Suko and Roy Eissinger started taking flying instructions at Glendive. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kountz were in Circle for business. Mr. Loren Stott, our depot agent and family left Monday for Glendive Where they will spend a few days. Jr. Yarger is now driving a Dodge Pickup. Jimmy Georege recently traded hos truck to Harley Berry for his car. Bill Meissner and family of Beauty Creek spent Sunday here at his parents home.

CIRCLE PILOT KILLED

Harold Massar of Circle, 38, was killed in the crash of his light plane about 4p.m. on the Buster Dunlap ranch south of Brockway, Mont. Kermit "Bud" Erickson, 46, of Vida, a passenger in the 150 hp -Citabra, suffered multiple fractures of the right leg and vertebra and burns. Erickson was flown to Billings hospital. Eye witnesses at the scene were Leroy Jordan, a neighbor fo Dunlap, and Bob Chambers, his hired man.

CHOSEN AS OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR

Merlin Gackle, son of MR. and Mrs. Richard Gackle of Circle, was one of two teachers chosen as outstanding young educators by the Lake Oswego Jaycees, in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

FIREMENS BALL SCHEDULED

Officers elected were president Joe Sokoloski, secretary-treasurer Gene Schuld; trustees Gary Meyer, Don Anderson, Jim Wilhelm, Ernie Kunesh and Wally Myhre. Sonny Louis Schriver will remain Fire Chief.

VIDA

Ray and Betty Nefzger were in Billings the first part of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Clinglingsmith has Sunday dinner with Anton Abraham;s. Monte Geer is home ona furlough from the Navy. Jerry Schillinger suffered a dislocated shoulder in the Circle-Baker game at Baker.

FRIENDSHIP

Jennie and Arne Idland had as their guests Mr and Mrs Earl Green and children for supper last week. Arvilla Ernst took some of the 6th grade boys to Vida to the basketball game.

CIRCLE REMAINS FOURTH PLACE IN DISTRICT -B

Circle playing a poor offensive game but a good defensive game, came from behind in the third period to take the lead and hold off Plentywood for their ninth win of the season. Outstanding defensive play was shown by Jiggs Wolff, Kim Murphy, and Scott Murphy. Leading rebounder was Dale Schillinger.

CARD PARTY

There were seven tables of players at the weekly car party held in the Catholic Church basement. First prizes went to John Breitbach and Ed Schillinger. Second place was won by Mrs. Rno Reinimer.

BROCKWAY

Mrs. Earl Fish of Columbia Falls is here at the home of her sister, Maybelle Steele, to help care for their mother, Mrs. Bertha Watt. Minnie Forster, Edith Dunlap and Nora LeValley were Sunday dinner guests of Emma Meissner.

HELD ON BURGLARY CHARGES

Monte Dahl, 19 Four Buttes, and Leslie Abraham, 22 Richey are being held in the Dawson County Jail and William Kuester, Jr., 20 of Richey is being held in County Jail in Green River Wyo. Dawson Couty was aiding Richland County sheriff department in investigation the theft of about 10 pigs in Richland County when they discovered other burglary's which also included tires which occurred in Aug. 27 and Sept 16 of last year. In Richland County, charges of larceny of livestock, (pigs) have been filed against them.

TRIAL ENDS IN HUNG JURY

Judge Richard Phillips declared the trial of State of Montana , McCone County vs. Sean Thomas James a mistrial as the result of a hung jury. After nearly 7 hours of deliberation, the jury vote was 11 innocent 1 guilty. Sean Thomas James, represented by Jay Lansing of Moses Law Firm in Billings, was charged on November 22, 1996, with Burglary, a felony, or in the alternative, Aggravated Burglary, a felony, in connection with the burglary of the Charles Noland residence located 4 ½ miles southwest of Circle on Highway 200 sometime between the dates of December 23-31, 1991. Dates were later narrowed down to December 24, 25, and early hours of the 26th. Chad Lala was also charged on November 22, 1996, in connection with the Noland Burglary. That case has been dismissed due to legal technicalities. States witness Dustin Shaw, nephew of Sheriff Jensen, had entered into an agreement for immunity for the 1991 Noland burglary and perjury prior to giving a statement in September 1997 testified he took part in the burglary, along with Sean James and Chad Lala. Shaw testified the burglary was "late Christmas shopping". Shaw stated they drove to the Matt James property and hid stuff in an old shack, and threw the jewelry out the car window along the Glendive highway.

HANSON FILES FOR SHERIFF

Republican, Marty D Hanson, of Vida, filed Monday seeking the position of McCone County Sheriff/Coroner. Hanson, a native of Anaconda has been a resident of McCone County for several years where he has engaged in farming with Beery Land and Livestock. Currently, Hanson is a criminal justice student at Commonwealth International Senior College.

International Supper at Schmidts banquet room. After supper, they were presented with a slide show given by Jerry and Ken Schillinger on their trip to New Zealand and Australia.

LOCAL STUDENTS NAMED TO DEAN'S HONOR LIST AT CONCORDIA COLLEGE

BROCKWAY BRIEFS

Recently, Arne Sutton, Henry Sutton, Tyke Colbert and Warren Quick flew to Indiana to take in a Hoosiers game. They were guests of Bobby Knight, the coach of the Hoosiers, as he had become acquainted with them while hunting in eastern Montana. Spending several days in Great Falls recently were Brad and Mary Kountz. They spent time with Jack Kountz who was hospitalized there and stayed with Barb Sutton. They also visited with Jeff and Sherri Walla and son Jarod during their stay.

Kelly Magalsky and Susan Huseby

Kelly Magalsky is an 18-year-old senior, and the son of Jim and Lucy Magalsky of Circle. Susan, a 16-year-old junior, is the daughter of Gene and Marian Huseby of Circle.
